BSA Scouts

Workshops & Dates for 2024

Complete all the requirements necessary to earn a BSA Merit Badge in one hands-on class! All instructors for these workshops are certified BSA Merit Badge counselors. They will guide you through each requirement, providing feedback and answering questions. At the end of the day, Scouts are required to complete an interview with their instructors to earn their Merit Badge. Some prerequisites are required.

Registration for each workshop opens the month prior to the workshop date.
Once completed, please send all prerequisites to lishaw@dunwoodynature.org for review.

Nature Study

Next Workshop April 20, 2024
The Nature merit badge covers a little bit about a lot of nature subjects including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and plants. Discover why different kinds of animals and plants are important to each other and to us.

Soil & Water Conservation

Next Workshop May 18, 2024
Investigate the importance of soil and water for plants, animals and humans alike. Participate in a conservation project, perform an experiment on how water flows through soil types, observe soil and water conservation practices at DNC, and more.

Sustainability (for scouts 13 years & older)

Next Workshop June 29, 2024
Scouts will do a good turn for the Earth as they learn what they can do to live more sustainably. The Scout undertakes projects to understand the big picture regarding topics such as water, food, energy, and transportation, as well as waste reduction, species decline, and world population. This class will be taught by leaders who are certified Merit Badge counselors.

This Merit Badge requires a significant amount of work after the workshop date. Scouts will be required to attend a follow up meeting to show their completed work to the counselor.

Environmental Science (for scouts 13 years & older)
Next Workshop July 20, 2024

Study a range of environmental science topics and issues including: The importance of bees to pollination, defining ecosystems, oil spill clean up techniques, field study comparison of different ecosystems, and more.

Reptiles & Amphibians
Next Workshop August 24, 2024
Reptiles and amphibians aren’t as gross and scary as you may think! Learn how to ID different reptiles, distinguish between venomous & nonvenomous, debunk common myths about snakes & frogs, and more.

Insect Study
Next Workshop September 21, 2024
During the workshop, observe insects in their natural habitats, including a live bee hive! Identify what makes certain insects helpful and others harmful to humans, why insects are important in the food chain, and more. Outside of the workshop, observe an insect transform from larva to adult during metamorphosis.

Forestry

Next Workshop October 19, 2024
Practice tree identification in the field, learn ways to best manage forest resources, hear from a local forester about careers in forestry*, hike along DNC’s trails to identify tree hazards, and more. *subject to availability of volunteers

All about birds! Learn how to use binoculars, practice bird identification, listen for bird calls, make a bird feeder, and more.

The Dunwoody Nature Center’s BSA Merit Badge workshops have been designed for the Scout to be able to earn their badge by the end of the session. This will require the completion of pre-requisite assignments. Satisfactory completion of the activities during the workshop will be verified with an interview between the scout and merit badge counselor at the end of the workshop. Scouts are encouraged and should read the official Merit Badge pamphlet prior to the workshop. All materials necessary for the day will be provided by the Dunwoody Nature Center.

All Merit Badge workshops are $25 per Scout, except Environmental Science is $30.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECTS

Eagle Scout projects have helped to support the mission of the Dunwoody Nature Center. To make the process consistent for all, please adhere to these policies when seeking approval and engagement for a project.

  • Scout or his/her family must be a member of the Dunwoody Nature Center in order to be approved for the project. If not already a member, click here.
  • Scouts are welcome to present their own ideas for a project or inquire if the staff has any potential projects that can be adopted if they don’t have an idea of their own.
  • Scout will contact the Environmental Education Director to present his/her project idea for acceptance, feasibility, and feedback. The Nature Center expects all projects to improve the grounds or programs at the Center to further our mission of inspiring a love of nature and cultivating greater environmental understanding and stewardship.
  • Scout will present a draft proposal to the Environmental Education Director for approval, before taking it through the Scout approval process.  Please note, the more thorough and professional the proposal, the better chance of acceptance.
  • The Environmental Education Director must approve all project plans and subsequent changes to the plan during the project—including all materials to be used during the project.
  • Once projects are approved by the Environmental Education Director, the Scout will commit to a start and end date for the project. If these dates are not honored, the project will be available for another scout to pursue.
  • The Scout may not begin work on the project, including scheduling work days or ordering supplies until the Project Plan has been signed off on by the beneficiary (Dunwoody Nature Center), the Scout Master, the district representative, and the troop committee chair.
  • Scout will coordinate all appointments and work days with the Environmental Education Director to make sure there are no conflicts with other activities happening at the center.
  • Scout will provide “before & after” photos to the Nature Center.
  • The scout is responsible for obtaining all materials for the project. Unless specifically stated in writing by the Environmental Education Director, the Nature Center will not contribute financially to any Eagle Scout project effort.
  • Nature Center staff must review any educational materials to be permanently installed before the scout produces the materials.
