FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a Junior Counselor?
Junior Counselors (JCs) are a group of teens that enjoy working with kids, environmental stewardship, and want to be outside!
During camp season, JCs assist adult staff with daily tasks and interact with young campers to enhance their experience. JCs can also assist with events or other programming if interested!
What are the qualifications needed to be a JC?
Successful JCs should be:
- mature, reliable, flexible, energetic, and creative!
- 13 or older to volunteer at the Dunwoody Nature Center
- 15 or older to volunteer at Island Ford
All JC’s must attend a pre-camp orientation, even if they have served before.
What is the time commitment?
Junior Counselors are not required to have a set number of hours. During summer camp we ask that JCs try commit to a five day camp week but we accept however many days you are available.
For Camp, the JC shifts are split into two types:
- Full-day (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
- Full-day shifts are assigned to 5-11 year old classes.
- Half-day (9:00 AM – 1:30 PM)
- Half-day shifts assist with the 4 year old classes.
What are the benefits?
Working at camp helps develop responsibility, independence, adaptability and teamwork. At the end of the program, JCs can request a letter from the Nature Center, testifying to their hours worked which can be used on a resume, college application, or required community service hours.
Do I need to attend training?
All new and returning JCs will be required to attend a pre-camp orientation. We will have an in-person session (required for first time JCs) and an online option available.
How can I apply?
Please email the Junior Counselor Coordinator, Autumn, to receive an application form.
