Park Improvements

March 28, 2018

Thank you for your patience as we continue to work with DeKalb County Schools on our front entry. We are VERY close to re-opening our main entrance along Roberts Drive and are very excited about the additional parking that it will provide.

We are making good progress on the North Woods Pavilion project. The flooring is complete and the framing is currently underway. We are shooting for an opening of the building the first week of June.

Our main driveway will remain closed for approximately another 2 weeks as the Austin construction team begin curbing and paving. Please continue to use the current construction entrance at the old ballfields and take the temporary road (all the way down the drive, on your left) to the Nature Center.

The pavilion projects is moving along nicely. If the weather holds, we will begin framing out the structure this week as well. We are excited about how this building is turning out and can’t wait to share it with the public when it opens at the beginning of the summer.

Work continues on both the North Woods Pavilion and the shared entry (formerly our main driveway) with Austin Elementary.

This week, we set the footings and poured concrete at the pavilion site. Our next step is to begin the actual construction of the building from the bottom up. We are thrilled with the site work and are looking forward to watching the building come out of the ground.

Crews got a good bit of work done this week on the entry driveway. Our entry will still be closed for another few weeks as they prepare the ground for paving. During this time, access is still available through the south entry (the old ballfields entry) via the temporary road that leads to our lower parking lot. The Nature Center is still open each day from 9:00 – 5:00 and the park will remain open during this process from sunrise until sunset.

Our driveway improvements began on February 15. The Nature Center is open during driveway construction, but visitors will need to use the temporary access road at 5321 Roberts Drive (the old baseball field entry).

We will be pouring concrete for the foundation and footings of the North Woods Pavilion on Monday, February 19 (weather permitting).

Thanks for your patience as we improve your park.

Construction on the new Austin Elementary school continues as DCSS prepares the site for the build. As part of their build out, construction work on the Nature Center driveway will most likely occur next week, unless there is not a dry day to begin. Once this occurs, the main driveway to the Nature Center will be closed and all cars will have to come in through the former baseball field entry and drive across on a temporary road to the Nature Center. As soon as this occurs, we will let you know.

With construction on our driveway getting ready to begin, some of the current trail access is blocked. To get to the Nature Center education building, the meadow, and back trails, it is probably easiest to park in our main lot in front of the education building and begin your explorations from there.

Lastly, the site work for the North Woods Pavilion is complete and the next step in the process is to pour the concrete foundation. This will occur as soon as we have a dry span of days. The site will be beautiful once the building is put into place, with many hardwoods, pine, American holly, and beech trees surrounding the building as it overlooks the meadow and Wildcat Creek. While they were readying the site for construction, the contractor was able to harvest a half dozen large boulders from the area that have been set aside to help landscape the site after construction.

If you’ve been by the Nature Center in the past week or two, you’ll have noticed that the construction of the new Austin Elementary School on the former baseball field property is well underway. We are excited about the future of this partnership, but realize that it’s going to take a little bit of time to get through the present. As part of that build out, construction work on the main driveway to the Nature Center will begin next week and visitors will need to access the Nature Center through a temporary road; however, both the Nature Center and the park will remain open during this process. Work on the driveway should take about a month.

We have also begun site work on our much anticipated North Woods Pavilion – an 1,800 s.f. facility tucked away in the northeast corner of the park that will serve as a home base for field trips, camps, and as a place in our community for your special events. We anticipate this building to be complete in May.

We intend to provide as many updates as possible for these project via our website and this newsletter each month. If you have any questions, please contact Alan Mothner at alan@dunwoodynature.org or 770-394-3322.
