Who’s afraid of...?

Come quell your fears at Dunwoody Nature Center’s winter lecture series. The creatures in our nightmares aren’t so scary once we learn more about them. Learn about spiders, wolves, poison ivy and others.

Pre-registration is required by the Friday before each lecture. Call DNC at 770-394-3322 or email lauren@dunwoodynature.org to reserve your spot. Donations appreciated.

Here's the line-up:

Tuesday February 20 at 7 pm:
Koalas

Renee & Brian Gracon

Okay, so nobody's really afraid of these guys. Their temperaments don't really match their cuddly exteriors, though, and koalas have plenty of reasons to be afraid of humans. Renee and Brian Gracon spent several weeks in the summer of 2006 on a koala-conservation project They will bring great stories and awesome slides to share.

Tuesday February 27 at 7 pm:
Snakes

GA Herp. Society

Possibly the most-feared critters out there — do they deserve their bad reputation? Not a bit. Can you imagine how many rats and mice we'd confront if snakes weren't out there working to control their numbers? Come learn about these intriguing creatures from a representative of the GA Herpetological Society.

Tuesday March 13 at 7 pm:
Poison Ivy

Nicole Martini & Dr. Lori Schaen

Nicole Martini, DeKalb Extension Horticulturist, and Dr. Lori Schaen, dermatologist, talk about this truly irritating plant. Does poison ivy have any redeeming qualities? Why do some plants manufacture chemicals designed to make us itch? How can we avoid them, or reduce the effects on our skin?
