In a customer satisfaction survey, camp families responded to questions with 82% to 95% favorable ratings.

Here are some of the parents' comments:

  • My child loved the interaction with bugs! This was the perfect camp for him.
  • She comes home every day excited to tell me what they did.
  • My child enjoyed the creek most of all! Simple things in life are good.
  • He really enjoyed learning about reptiles and American Indian culture. Such a great combination.
  • My one regret living in Dunwoody is our small backyard. It is wonderful to have Dunwoody Nature Center to provide for my child the BIG backyard exploring experience I had as a child.
  • He loved exploring outside and the teachers did a great job letting them meet all the reptiles up close and personal.

And the children told us what they liked best:

  • The creek!
  • Stream, trees, outdoors, and making villages with other kids.
  • Seeing the bees at work in the living room.
  • Finding salamanders.
  • Can you guess? Water play!

General Information

  • *Age groupings: Teenies - 3 & 4-year-olds; Littles - Rising Young 5's, K & 1st Grade; Middles - Rising 2nd-4th Grades.
  • Before a child turns 5, he/she is considered a TEENIES camper. After a child turns 5, he/she is considered a LITTLES camper!
  • Camps offer age-appropriate, themed activities that appeal to different learning styles.
  • Campers enjoy nature discovery, trail walks, arts & crafts, science experiments, games, free play and snack/lunch time. ALL camps include one day, or more, spent mostly in Wildcat Creek.
  • We will welcome several special guests to camp: beekeepers, birders, snake experts, storytellers, musicians and more.
  • Our teachers are adult professional educators, with extensive backgrounds in science, environmental education and art. A staff member trained in CPR and First Aid is on site at all times.
  • Too old to be a camper? We place junior counselors with each session. Call for information on age and service requirements.
  • We emphasize waste reduction and water conservation in every camp. So we recommend reusable containers for food and drink.
  • Every camper receives a custom Dunwoody Nature center bandanna that serves as both napkin/towel during camp and fun game for later on. Each year's design is different.

Behavior Policy

The Dunwoody Nature Center’s goal is for ALL campers to have the opportunity to discover their strengths and have fun. In order to do this, all of our kids must feel safe at camp. Please review the following policies with your child before arriving at camp, as this is what helps us ensure everybody’s safety and the quality of our programs.

Rules

  1. Have fun and be safe.
  2. Respect one another and yourself, the DNC, and others’ property.
  3. Participate in activities, be involved, and follow DNC Staff directions at all times.
  4. No gang related activities, dress, or language.
  5. Zero tolerance policy for weapons, firecrackers, smoking, drinking, drug use/illegal substances, and violent, physical, and/or verbal outbursts.
  6. Inappropriate language is prohibited.
  7. No sexual anything (this includes inappropriate touching, words, and harassment.)
  8. Appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn at all times.
  9. If your child requires special assistance, please notify a DNC Staff member one week prior to your child’s start date.

At the DNC, we understand that everyone makes choices. For every choice we make, there is a consequence, good or bad. One consequence that can occur with poor choices is that a camper could be sent home. We only send a child home if we absolutely have to. If your child is sent home, you are responsible for picking him or her up at camp.  You will not receive a refund and will be responsible for any charges that are incurred due to destruction of DNC’s or another individual’s property. There are 2 major reasons a child could be sent home:

Camper is a danger to him/herself or others.
This could include:

  • Hurting oneself or someone else (fighting!)
  • Running away/leaving camp
  • Refusing prescribed hydration, food, or medication
  • Anything illegal

Camper requires constant one-on-one attention.
This could include:

  • Refusing to follow camp rules, code of conduct, and staff directions
  • Destroying DNC or other’s property
  • Stealing

Parent/Guardian will sign the following statement on the first day of a camp or class session:
I have read and understand the rules set forth by the Dunwoody Nature Center and certify that my child(ren) is/are participating with my knowledge and consent. I understand that failure to comply with these rules will result in disciplinary action, which can include sitting out from participation, suspension from camp, or expulsion. I have also reviewed the camp code of conduct with my child(ren) and explained the possible consequence of inappropriate behavior. By signing this document, I acknowledge that I am aware that photos taken of my child(ren) during camp may appear in print media as well as the internet.
